What is Urban Renaissance?
Urban Renaissance is a process which has been around Europe and the United States since the late 1960's. It is the principle of involving the community in designing an environment in which they want to live, will be attractive to others and meets the needs and aspirations for all. Above all it is about quality - of everything, from the design of public space to the standard of your child's education, to the presentation of a take away meal.
It has been discussed in the UK since the mid 80's and is now embodied in a white paper, prepared in 2000 by Lord Richard Rogers, the renowned architect.
The Regional Development Agencies were given the task of rolling out the programme, and Yorkshire Forward are the body for this region. Towns were invited to become 'Renaissance Towns' and Scarborough quickly responded. A Town Team was formed, headed by Tom Pindar of Pindar plc the international printing and typesetting group.
The Town Team and the several underpinning action groups, meet monthly to debate and influence much that goes on in Scarborough.
Under Tom's leadership the Town Team flourished and continued to influence many decisions made in relation to much of the activity in the town. He stepped down at the Reunion in October 2007 and handed the role to over local businessman and impresario Tony Peers.
